Enter obituary information here. William 'Bill' Stroud Jr., 79, died peacefully Friday, July 8, 2016, at Harbor Grace Hospice, Atlanta, Ga. He was born Jan. 26, 1937, to the late William Stroud Sr. and Lessie Pearl (Lucas) Stroud, in Harrison Township, Allegheny County. The oldest of three children, he attended Har-Brack High School in Brackenridge and received a Bachelor of Arts degree in sociology from Morris Brown College, Atlanta, Ga., where he was initiated into Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity. In Jan. 1962, Bill was inducted into the Army as a medical specialist serving two years active duty. He was hired by General Motors (GM) as a production worker in 1964 and retired in May 1991 after 27 years of service. During his employment with GM he was among the first African Americans to hold the position of supervisor and rose to the position of General Supervisor at the Lakewood plant in Atlanta, Ga. After his retirement from GM, Bill worked with the Atlanta public school system for two years as a substitute school teacher and school guard. In these roles, he worked and mentored children with disciplinary issues. Continuing his mentoring, Bill coached and trained children playing little league football and baseball. He was an ambassador of golf for John A. White and Brown Mill golf courses assisting in the education of golf to young and disadvantaged golfers. Bill loved sports, hunting, fishing and entertaining friends. But the center of his world was his family. He is survived by his wife, Thelma Stroud; son, Garry Stroud Sr. (Andrea); three grandsons, Garry Stroud Jr. (Cherell), Chandler Stroud and Preston Stroud; two great-grandchildren, Zachery and Miyah Stroud; his mother, Lessie Pearl (Lucas) Stroud; and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins. In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by his sister, Constance Stroud; and his brother, Clifford Stroud Sr. The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. until time of service at 11 a.m. Monday, July 18, 2016 at KRYNICKI FUNEARL HOME INC., 1007 Freeport Road, Natrona Heights, with the Rev. Edward Carter officiating. Interment at Mt. Airy Cemetery, Harrison Township. Full military honors will be accorded at the cemetery. Online condolences may be made at www.krynickifh.com.
